The Greatness of Serena Williams
“I always believe I can beat the best, achieve the best, I always see myself in the top position”. This is a powerful quote by the woman herself Serena Williams. This just farther simplifies her greatness. Serena Jameka Williams was born September 26, 1981. She is an American professional tennis player currently ranked as the 22nd best player in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association. Williams began intensive tennis training at age three. She won her first major championship in 1999 and completed the career Grand Slam in 2003. Along with her individual success, Serena has teamed with sister Venus Williams to win a series of doubles titles. In 2017, she defeated her big sister at the Australian Open to claim the 23rd Grand Slam singles title of her career. There are millions of things that make her so great but I will narrow it down to at least 9. So people can understand and know why she defines greatness.
First, that makes her so great, she is a top 10 destroyer. Serena has won 50 of her last 56 matches against Top 10 WTA players. This is something truly remarkable for woman everywhere. For the simple fact that many women have not been able to achieve this. Especially at her age. At 33 years old, she is thrashing her peers like no one else ever has. Meaning not many people at the age could achieve something like that. Which also proves to be a huge milestone.
Secondly, as we stated before her age. Her age seems to be no reflection. She seems to be greater than ever. She is a American champion at 33 years and 257 days, showing no signs of slowing down. This gives her the title of oldest world No. 1, irrespective of gender. She is becoming the Wolverine of tennis. She seems to be a mutant or superhuman that cannot and will not be stopped. That drive and passion to keep going beyond her age. Shows just how much she feels towards the game. She wants to be the greatest and is not letting the slightest thing stop her from that.
Thirdly, she is defiantly is clutch. Meaning this woman is a savage, when it comes to the game. When all odds are stacked against her, she manages to overcome it and succeed. Seriously, Serena has ice in her veins. In tournament finals, she is 13 for her past 13. This is truly incredible just think about how many times your favorite sports team or favorite athlete wins 13 games in a row? Serena has put together this incredible string of wins on the highest stage in her sport. Looking at her last 29 finals, she has won 27 of them.
Fourthly, becoming as great as she is. She defiantly earned a couple of GOLDEN medals. She is tied for the Olympic gold medals. She has received four gold medals. This is the most in tennis. One more and she will have the achieved the most in history as a woman tennis player. A long with her sister Venus. Each of them has won one singles medal, while winning the other three as a doubles team. Other four-time gold medal winner’s example would be people such as Hayley Wickenheiser, Missy Franklin, and Usain Bolt minus two.
Fifth, it honestly seems as if it is Serena versus everybody. She has achieved and honestly beaten everybody either multiple or several times. Currently, Serena almost has as many Grand Slam titles. She has literally been blessed to earn 20 grand slams. It is almost has the as the rest of the WTA COMBINED. They only have received an amount of 21 grand slams. However, if you really think about, let’s take Venus out of the equation. Then when you updated the standings. The Williams sisters has 27 Grand Slams, and the WTA has only 14 Grand Slams.
Then sixth, she defiantly has proven to be the dominated in this sport. Like by the far is the front-runner against everybody. When you can be a Front-runner in your sport. That makes you a huge target and definitely a greatest athlete. Athletes such as Tom Brady, Lebron, and Michael Phelps are front-runners in their sports. When Serena managed to win the first set in a Grand Slam final. She simple has a perfect 18-0. Even when she loses the first set. She absolutely puts her head down. And still gets a respectable 2-4 record.
Seventh, has her being clutch players. This means she defiantly can win under pressure. In addition, once any athlete can achieve that. That is greatness. She is simple the Queen of pressure. Serena boasts the best Grand Slam final winning percentage in history. This being 83.3%. She does not own the most GS titles. She is very close but not there yet. She has not been to the most GS finals, she has not won the most GS matches, but she sure does know how to show up in GS matches when it matters most. She defiantly can define all the odds.
Eighthly, even though earlier we did talk about her age. How she still is miraculously playing the game. We didn’t talk about, how she is still winning as her age increases. Usually, , people hit an incline but once again, she is overcoming something. Martina Navratilova won Wimbledon when she was 33 years and 263 days, making her the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam. Serena is nipping at her heels, already winning two Slams at age 33. She set the record for longest gap between first and last GS wins at the 2015 Australian Open, and then proceeded to break her own record at Roland Garros.
Finally, her winning percentage is crazy. Literally, Any time Serena steps on the court, she has an excellent chance to win the match. An 86% chance, in fact. Although this seems astronomical, it actually lags behind all-time greats, ranking fifth. This mark rises to third when only taking Grand Slams into account, emphasizing how cold the ice in her veins really is.
All this showing, the greatness of Serena Williams.
